Value Ice Cream Cones Students learned the value of painting...value! Value is making a color lighter or darker. Miss Sarah, our student teacher, finished out her time here teaching the students to make their scoops lighter with white and darker with black. After they painted, scoops were cut out and piled high onto their cone!
Clay Houses Students were very busy creating their clay houses! They added textures and patterns to their clay slab pieces. They slipped the pieces to adhere them together. When built, they could add finishing touches like shutters, chimneys or rocks.
Symmetry Shapes To follow up our symmetry stamps, student cut out shapes and reflect them along the line of symmetry. The empty cut out space becomes another shape when placed onto the background color. These are the negative spaces in the picture. When finished, students used foam shapes to play a symmetry matching game.
Symmetry Stamps Students reviewed the concept of symmetry by creating a stamp reflecting shapes along the line of symmetry using foam pieces. Students were then introced to block printing. They rolled out ink onto their blocks to print multiple copies of their work. We even broke out the white glitter to add a little bling!
Eric Carle Owls Students created a collage of owls at night using papers they had made themselves. On the first day of the project, students went from table to table exploring printing with a variety of odds and ends such as potato mashers, bath scrubbies, bubble wrap, cookie cutters, and sponges. Next, they splatter painted a dark color paper to create stars in a night sky. The following class we looked at the illustrations by Eric Carle. Carle also made his own papers for his collage illustrations. Student created a tree branch and an owl. To finish the project, students added supporting details to their owl and the background. What we learned: -texture -printing -using shapes to make a whole object -collage
Printed Castles Students are working on creating their own dream castle. They drew the exterior and then printed the bricks with sponges. Once cut out, they placed them into the backgrounds created. They used paper and drawing to add additional details to the castles.
FINISHED PICTURES COMING SOON!
Reflections The PTA asks the school to participate in the Reflections contest each year. The contest has a theme that students create their work from; this year's theme was "Heroes Around Us." 3rd and 2nd grade participated in creating work in art class.
Remembrance Poppies: The poppy flower symbolizes remembrance for those who were lost in war. Students learned about this, and they created a landscape of a poppy field. Key concepts- scale in distance, texture, mixed media (chalk and paint).
Tape Paint Students taped off the surface of the paper with thin tape. As each line of tape overlapped another, it created small geometric shapes on the paper. Students used the primary colors to paint each shape on the paper. They were encouraged to create new colors by mixing the primary colors on their paper. Some students even chose to add patterns onto their painted shapes! Once dry, the tape is removed to leave white lines between the painted spaces.
Blowing Lines Students made creative lines using oil pastels and crayons, painted the background, and finally added their own photo!
Art To Remember This fall, the art room is creating art work to send in to a company called Art to Remember. The company offers the families in our building the opportunity to purchase items with their student's art work on it (like coffee mugs, keys chains, mouse pads, tote bags, ornaments, etc...). And as an added bonus, 25% of the proceeds go directly to our art class for the purhcase of additional art tools and supplies! 2nd grade created artwork inspired by the artist Heather Galler. She is a current working artist in the US known for creating bright bold colors and patterns in her work. The students drew flowers, vases, and a background with black sharpie. Next they added bits of color or pattern with crayon, and then finished it with watercolors. Check out Heather Galler's work: www.etsy.com/shop/HeatherGallerArt
